Actor Ryan Reynolds has spoken on his extensive battle to overcome anxiety.
Ryan Reynolds Details His Life-Long Battle With Anxiety-‘I Would Think To Myself, I’m Gonna Die’
The actor may be one of the biggest names in Hollywood, and yet, despite being a seasoned actor in his own right, he still struggles from time to time. He expanded on how he would get very nervous when it came to conducting interviews on talk shows, or in the run up to appearing on TV.
So much so that he felt he was often on the cusp of dying. In an interview with Sunday Morning, he said: “I’ve had anxiety my whole life really….I remember I’d be standing backstage before the curtain would open, and I would think to myself, “I’m gonna die. I’m literally gonna die here.”
This begs the question, what could have made Ryan feel like this? After all, he has a life that people could only dream of. Well, he admitted that this may have been due to his father James Reynolds, who was a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman.
Therefore, seeing his father be in a very tough profession, naturally led his father to exhibit similar behaviour on Ryan when he was growing up. But rather than teaching him how to become tough, it looks as though it had the opposite effect.
He added: “My dad was a tough guy. He was good in many ways as well, but he was tough on us. This is not meant to be some sob story…Growing up in my house, it was never relaxing or easy and I know that, throughout my life, I’ve dealt with anxiety in different ways.”
Nevertheless, there is no denying that Ryan has managed to overcome this to some degree, given what he has achieved in his career. And by being so frank about his story, it will have inspired the next generation of actors that it is possible to overcome anything if you put your mind to it.
There was no obligation for him to speak about this, but in doing so, it demonstrates that he has come a long way from the early days. And hopefully, things continue to stay that way going forward.
