According to reports, Hollywood stars such as Leonardo Di Caprio, Mark Ruffalo and Ben Stiller have endorsed a letter that was written to the Royal Bank of Canada calling for them to “withdraw support from the Coastal GasLink pipeline, effective immediately.”

This was on the basis that the funding was leading to the perpetuation of climate change, as well as destroying the indigenous people within the area. And given that climate change is deemed to be one of the most important issues of our time, it was only natural that people had a lot to say about this issue.

In the video here, we can see that Mark Ruffalo is extremely against the manner in which gas is being extracted by the company. He is then heard saying the following comments: “The Royal Bank of Canada are financing a fracked gas pipeline bulldozing through the land of the Wet’suwet’en nation.”

“The Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs never consented to this pipeline construction through their terrorities, which would risk the sacred headwaters of the Wedzin Kwa River.”

In response, the Royal Bank of Canada has failed to reply to the negative scrutiny it has received, as a result of the letter. Nevertheless, the response on social media was very damning towards the actors who supported this.

A Significant proportion of people felt that the celebrities were hypocritical, given that they had done nothing themselves to tackle climate change. And in the process of speaking out against this, their words merely lacked credibility.

One person wrote: “@MarkRuffalo please look in your own back yard. Your country has been taking our water for years. Fix yourselves,” while another person stated: “Isn’t that kind of hypocritical of Leo who rented a Yacht at Christmas that burns $340k of file to go just 5700 miles??”

Time will tell whether this letter does put public pressure on the policy makers, but in the meantime, the most important thing is to set an example by making changes within one’s own life.
