Netflix Cancels “The Baby-Sitters Club” After Just Two Seasons – Here’s Why

As the kids these days say, what the actual you-know-what. Netflix has decided to cancel everyone’s favorite reboot, “The Baby-Sitters Club” after just two seasons because of some pesky “algorithms.” The series, based on Ann M. Martin’s novels, ran for two seasons on the streamer. Here’s what you need to know.

Series creator Rachel Shukert issued a statement announcing that her version of the club, based on the one imagined by Ann M. Martin way back in 1986 has been given the axe. The series, which follows the friendship and adventures of seven friends — Kristy, Claudia, Stacey, Mary Anne, Dawn, Jessi and Mallory — as they start their own babysitting business in Stoneybrook, CT.

She said, “I have wanted to be a part of the world Ann M. Martin created since I was 7 years old, and for two amazing seasons I actually got to be. It was a dream come true. Although I am heartbroken not to be returning to Stoneybrook for 20 more seasons, I am so proud of the incredible show our amazing cast and crew created and the way it brought joy and comfort to so many when they needed it most.”

The statement continued, “Thank you to Walden Media and to Netflix for giving us the opportunity to introduce Kristy, Claudia, Stacey, Mary Anne, Dawn, Jessi, and Mallory to a new generation of fans who I know will love them as much as we do for years to come.”

Shukert also explained that the series was doing well and had a solid viewership, but not as good as some of Netflix’s other series. In other words, their ratings didn’t come to some of the K-dramas out there.

She said, “For this show that has a fine viewership but is not a monster hit, but it’s beloved by fans … does that matter? I don’t know. I think we had the bad luck to come out at about the same time as Squid Game, which showed them how crazy numbers could get. Numbers that were totally respectable and successful last year were suddenly seen in a different way. I don’t have access to a lot of this data, and in general creators don’t have access to this data at Netflix, so it’s what you put together on your own.”
