Even though she was born in Ukraine, Mila Kunis admits that she used to tell people that she was Russian, and not Ukranian. The actress fled Ukraine in 1991 with her family when she was just 7. Here’s what she has to say.
In an interview with Maria Shriver for Conversations Above the Noise, Mila said, “People were like, ‘Oh, you’re so Eastern European.’ I was like, ‘I’m so LA! What do you mean?’ Like, my whole life I was like, ‘I am LA through and through.’”

Mila also said that while she now identified as American, being Ukrainian felt “irrelevant” to her for quite some time. She also said that she would tell people that she was Russian for a “multitude of reasons.”
She continued, “One of them being when I came to the States and I would tell people I’m from Ukraine, the first question I’d get was, ‘Where is Ukraine?’ And then I’d have to explain Ukraine and where it is on the map, and I was like, ‘Ugh, that’s exhausting.’”
Mila also said that she, along with millions of people around the world, simply just can’t comprehend the bloodshed and ongoing carnage in Ukraine. It’s been almost three weeks since Russian military forces have invaded her home country.
“This happens and I can’t express or explain what came over me, but all of a sudden I was like, ‘Oh my God, I feel like a part of my heart just got ripped out,’” she said. “It was the weirdest feeling.”
Mila and her husband Ashton Kutcher have announced that they pledge to match $ million in aid donations for the people of Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia announced temporary cease-fire in 2 cities to allow civilian evacuations while Ukrainian officials say Russian shelling hasn’t stopped.
