Maurice Benard’s State of Mind had a special guest this week we’re sure many GH and Days fans were looking forward to. The actor spoke to former co-star Tyler Christopher, who once played Nikolas Cassadine on General Hospital, as well as Stefan DiMera on Days of Our Lives. While fans might not see him back on Daytime anytime soon, the actor was able to share some of the struggles he’s been through. Let’s take a look at more of Benard’s conversation with him.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind gets real
So, there has been some talk about Tyler Christopher and some of the struggles he’s dealt with. The actor was in the news at least once for these struggles, however, there is so much more than anyone guessed. And it’s a great reminder that you never can tell what a person is going through, so it’s best to be kind and try not to judge. For Christopher, the drinking we talked about in another article led not only to near-death experiences, but it also left him with another huge medical challenge that required a medical guardianship. This episode was so intense and left a lot of emotions. However, it was also such an inspirational conversation. Here’s why.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind on survival
So, we mentioned previously that Christopher had a traumatic brain injury that was related to his drinking. He had tremors that resulted in a fall that left him in ICU with a very bleak outlook. During the interview, Christopher told Benard his family was given little hope. In fact, the doctor came out in the middle of surgery to say that he was likely not going to make it. However, against the odds, Tyler did pull through. However, the doctor then warned his family the actor would remain as they saw him in ICU in that moment—with memory loss, unable to walk and talk. The doctor’s dire predictions prompted a strong reaction from Benard when his former co-star related the story. And it was such a great lesson, too.
A lot of people might get that kind of news and give up. But Christopher didn’t. Instead, he committed to doing the work needed to regain his health and life. Within four months, he was walking again, talking, and made other progress. It just goes to show that doctors are people, too. And people by nature are flawed and make mistakes. It also proves that the right mental attitude and serious work can sometimes work miracles, and we love that Christopher was willing to share such hard stories to bring messages like that to fans.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind: Finding answers
As we mentioned in another piece, Christopher talked about having bipolar disorder as well, something he and Benard bonded over. This, plus his brain injury and addiction have made things complicate for the actor from a healing standpoint. However, Christopher revealed he believes he’s found exactly the right person to help.
He spoke about finding a doctor not long ago who understands each of Christopher’s challenges. Under this doctor’s guidance, Christopher said he believes he’s found a plan that will work for him. While he believes it’s possible he might never be 100% healed from his injury and he still experiences side effects from it, we were glad to hear he’s doing a lot better and is able to work on a couple of projects. Stay tuned for more on that in another one.
