In the latest episode of “And Just Like That”, Stanford Blatch (Willie Garson) was given what some call an ‘emotional sendoff’, in which he said goodbye in a letter to bestie Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) in a touching letter in which he said he moved to Japan and didn’t tell anyone because he knew she would cry and he didn’t want to cause her any more tears.
Okay, fair, because Willie Garson left production unexpectedly due to the fact that he passed away after a long battle with cancer in his home.
Goodbye, Stanford Blatch
However the way they bid him goodbye was hardly as emotional as people are claiming. They said that he moved to Japan to manage a teenage tiktok star who was huge in Asia and that while his letter to Carrie was really sweet and beautiful, he unceremoniously asked his husband, Anthony Marentino (Mario Cantone) for a divorce in a letter addressed to him.
That letter was not read on-screen, but we can only assume that the sentiment behind it wasn’t quite as… beautiful. The way they left Stanford’s storyline however was a bit up in the air though. It didn’t seem to be a very Stanford like move for one thing, judging from his character’s past appearances in the series, and it also possibly left room for him to be recast at some point because moving to Japan doesn’t equate death.
It’s too soon to say how they would handle recasting a character like Stanford, and who on earth would have the history with Carrie that Stanford does. They could always let him be a presence on the show, like Carrie stating that she received a text or a DM from Stanford from time to time and that way it would still be in keeping with his character but you wouldn’t necessarily have to recast him, and that would be fine.
However to call this sendoff ‘emotional’ is really more a reflection on the situation surrounding Garson’s sudden departure, and not the way the character was written out. Still, considering how sudden this was, they did the best they could with what they had.
Our hearts go out to the cast and crew of “And Just Like That” and to the family and friends of Willie Garson. Rest in Peace, Stanford. Stay tuned!!!
