There’s a message being sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the world is hoping that it’s loud and clear: the invasion of Ukraine cannot be tolerated, and the entertainment world has certainly responded. The Cannes Film Festival is the latest to join the Russian cultural boycott. Here’s what you need to know.
The world famous Cannes Film Festival has become the latest cultural institution to announce a boycott of Russia. In a statement, the organizers said, “Unless the war of assault ends in conditions that will satisfy the Ukrainian people, it has been decided that we will not welcome official Russian delegations nor accept the presence of anyone linked to the Russian government.”

However, despite the boycott, the festival’s organizers say the will continue to voice support for the artists and filmmakers who are amongst the Russians protesting against the invasion of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, a few Hollywood entertainment companies have already acted to stop distribution of their films in Russia – notably Warner Bros’ eagerly anticipated superhero film The Batman, due to open there in the coming weeks and widely expected to be one of the biggest releases of the year. It will bypass Russia.
Another report says that the United States is urging all Americans to leave Russia as Putin is warning against a Ukrainian no-fly zone. The U.S. State Department is urging Americans to leave Russia immediately, warning of potential harassment by Russian security officials and of possible issues with accessing money within the country.
That said, Russian Putin warned that he would consider any third-parties that declare a no-fly zone over Ukraine to be participants in the conflict. We will update you with all of the latest details as they come in.
