While there are a lot of celebrities and television personalities that are getting canceled left and right, it must feel good to be someone like Whoopi Goldberg. That’s because the television personality apparently just got a slight slap on the wrist when the ABC network decided to suspend her for just two weeks for comments that she made about the Holocaust on “The View.” Here’s what you need to know.
According to reports, Whoopi had been asked to take time to “reflect and learn about the impact of her comments,” Kim Godwin, president of ABC News, said. This all comes after she said the historic atrocity was not “about race” during a discussion about a Tennessee school board’s decision to ban Pulitzer prize-winning Holocaust graphic novel Maus.
Whoopi Goldberg Gets Just A Light Slap On The Wrist For Her Comments About The Holocaust
Following a backlash to her remarks online, Whoopi, apologized, saying Jewish people around the world have “always had my support” in a statement.
But in a statement posted online on Tuesday, Godwin said: “Effective immediately I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks following her wrong and hurtful comments. While Whoopi has apologized, I have asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family, and communities.”
While on “The View” last week, Whoopi said, Let’s be truthful, the Holocaust isn’t about race, it’s not. It’s about man’s inhumanity to man, that’s what it’s about. These are two groups of white people.” She has so far gotten heavy criticism online from Jewish groups and others.
