Eddie Vedder, the lead singer of 90’s supergroup, Pearl Jam recently made some remarks about the ‘80s glam metal band, Motley Crue. Now the Crue’s bassist, Nikki Sixx is firing back via Twitter, starting a war between the 40-50-year-old set.
Vedder has a third solo album, Earthling, coming out on Friday, February 11. While speaking to the New York Times about the album, he began to reminisce about his early days on the music scene, pre-Jam.
Speaking about working as a tech at a club in California, Vedder didn’t mince words about the quality of the acts he was forced to endure.
“You know, I used to work in San Diego loading gear at a club,” he said. “I’d end up being at shows that I wouldn’t have chosen to go to — bands that monopolized late-’80s MTV. The metal bands that — I’m trying to be nice — I despised.”
Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder And Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx Sparring Sparks Debate
One specific band Vedder took aim at was Motley Crue, of which he said, “‘Girls, Girls, Girls’ and Motley Crue: f#$k you. I hated it. I hated how it made the fellas look. I hated how it made the women look. It felt so vacuous.”
Vedder went on to say the Seattle grunge scene that exploded in the late 80’s/early ’90s with bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, and, of course, Pearl Jam was far more his speed. Though, surprisingly, it wasn’t only the music. It had to do with Vedder’s inherent feminism.
“One thing that I appreciated was that in Seattle and the alternative crowd, the girls could wear their combat boots and sweaters, and their hair looked like Cat Power’s and not Heather Locklear’s — nothing against her,” Vedder continued. “They weren’t selling themselves short. They could have an opinion and be respected. I think that’s a change that lasted.
Unsurprisingly, Nikki Sixx didn’t exactly appreciate Vedder’s comments.
“Made me laugh today reading how much the singer in Pearl Jam hated @MotleyCrue. Now considering that they’re one of the most boring bands in history it’s kind of a compliment isn’t it?” Sixx tweeted, starting a debate between the Jam fans and the Crue crew.
Pearl Jam was a band with revolutionary stances on societal issues, Eddie wrote Pro-Choice on his arm during Unplugged, not to mention all of the work they did for women rights. All Motley Crue has ever done is give domestic abusers a soundtrack to listen too. https://t.co/x3wqlIZQKO

And some figured there was a better way to resolve this than firing social media shots
Motley Crue and Pearl Jam should settle this by writing and releasing some kick ass new albums. pic.twitter.com/C2f0yHJpI2

While it’s obvious Vedder is not a “hair band” fan, he did leave some nice words about another 80’s/890’s phenom. “Guns N’ Roses came out and, thank God, at least had some teeth.”
Vedder’s new album, Earthling features contributions from Ringo Starr, Elton John and Stevie Wonder and Vedder has already kicked off his album tour. Though we probably wont see Elton or Stevie, he is being joined by an all-star band including Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and drummer Chad Smith and Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney.
We don’t think Nikki, Tommy, Mick or Vince will be running out to Tower Records to secure a copy.
