Author Candace Bushnell “startled” by “And Just Like That”

It seems that the fans of Sex and the City aren’t the only ones that are startled by HBO’s new Sex and the City reboot “And Just Like That’. It seems that the author to the OG book, Candace Bushnell, suffers from culture shock as well! In a recent interview with the New Yorker, she was asked if she had had any of the moments that the cast of AJLT had, concerning culture and gender and her answer was this:

“No. I’m really startle by a lot of the decisions made in the reboot. You know it’s a television product, done with Michael Patrick King and Sarah Jessica Parker, who have both worked with HBO a lot in the past. HBO decided to put this franchise back into their hands for a variety of reasons and this is what they came up with.”

When asked if she saw herself in the series, she went onto say, “Not at all. I mean, Carrie Bradshaw ended up being a quirky woman who married a really rich guy. And that’s not my story, or any of my friends’ stories. But TV has its own logic.”

I think that is saying bunches about the series itself. If the author doesn’t recognize herself in the story then it just speaks to the authenticity, or lack thereof, of the story itself. A lot of fans would agree with her though, because no one who is currently Bradshaw’s age really sees themselves in the reboot at all, rather its sort of become a parody of its former self.

Sex and the City used to be a culturally hip phenomenon and now this reboot seems to exist to poke fun at the ‘Karen phenomenon’ because right now the characters are all iterations of that one stereotype that we don’t like – Karen.

That’s not to say that the characters couldn’t potentially evolve, that’s not to say that the series can’t be salvaged – with the proper writing it probably could, heck, with the proper storyline and arc we might even come to like Che Diaz.. okay maybe not, but the point is… it’s still early and things are still salvagable… if only the powers that be will take it in that direction. Please. We’re begging. Stay tuned!!!
