High School Students In New York City Stage Walkout Protests Amid Rising Covid Cases

High school students in New York City have decided to take matters into their own hands after they staged walkout protests in response to what they believed to be safety concerns amid rising Covid-19 cases on campus.

It is no secret that the pandemic has divided people across many fault lines across the globe. And at a time where there is increasing division, this is the last thing that people wanted to happen.

And yet, when it comes to deciding whether or not safety is being respected, that is something that ultimately has to take precedence over everything else.

According to reports, an approximate 200 students decided to walk out of a variety of schools which included Brooklyn Technical High School.

And one such student is quoted as saying the following: “I’m not motivated to learn when the environment in the school is what it is. It feels like pseudo education.” This story, although worrying, was foreseen in light of the background noise that was coming out.

Just recently, ‘Sex and the City’ actress Cynthia Nixon blasted New York City Mayor Eric Adams by stating how he had not been doing an adequate job of making sure that students and parents understood what Covid protocols had to be followed.

In a statement of the time, she remarked: “THIS is what happens when you have a Mayor who thinks swagger can replace actual functioning Covid-safety protocols that keep schools up & running & teaching effectively.”

Regardless of what you think about the walkout protest, the very fact of the matter is that something has to be done in light of the statistics that are coming out.

Figures indicate that on Monday and Tuesday this week,  8,670 and 11,000 new cases of Covid emerged respectively. And given that this potentially includes students who are both vaccinated and unvaccinated, the authorities must act.

Another student stated: “We don’t feel safe at school. It’s pretty much that simple. There are so many cases going around and we think more should be done.”

With things not looking like they will get better, it is clear that decisive action must be taken. If you liked reading this article, then check out our other features on the Daily Soap Dish.
