The world was shook by the death of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. He was 90 years old and died on Sunday, December 26. The South African civil rights activist was confirmed dead in Cape Town. He was a Nobel Peace Prize winner and fought for the rights of many of his people.
Tutu’s Legacy
“Tutu was a living embodiment of faith in action, speaking boldly against racism, injustice, corruption, and oppression, not just apartheid South Africa but wherever in the world he saw wrongdoing, especially when it impacted the most vulnerable and voiceless in society,” his foundation said on Sunday.

They continued, “Officially ‘retiring’ from public life on his 79th birthday, Tutu continued to speak out on a range of ethical and moral issues: illegal arms deals, xenophobia. oppressed people in Palestine, respect for the rule of law, HIV/AIDS, Tibet, China, Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, and LGBTQI+ rights.” ‘
Tutu was also part of the campaigns for climate change and human rights. He pushed all people to work together and cooperate. He wanted to be the change that is needed in our world to build communities and relationships that last forever. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 and was nominated in 1981, 9182, and 1983 for his tactics of non-violence and dismantling apartheid.
Twitter was all a buzz on Sunday morning by South Africans that were mourning his loss. Cyril Ramaphosa wrote, “The passing of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is another chapter of bereavement in our nation’s farewell to a generation of outstanding South Africans who have bequeathed us a liberated South Africa.
Desmond Tutu was a patriot without equal; a leader of principle and pragmatism who gave meaning to the biblical insight with faith without works is dead. We pray that Archbishop Tutu’s soul will rest in peace but that his spirit will stand sentry over the future of our nation.”
Tutu was born in 1931 in Transvaal and was the Bishop of Johannesburg from 1985 to 1986, then he became the Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1994. He is known for his book The Rainbow People of God: The Making of a Peaceful Revolution. Tutu and his wife, Nomalizo Leah Tutu have four children. He leaves quite the legacy for his country and people all over the world are mourning his loss.
It appears that he passed away from natural causes and as we mourn for this amazing man, we can look back on the impact that he had on our world.
