ITV newsreader Kylie Pentelow has been heavily criticised after she had mistakenly announced that the Pope had died on live television during a Christmas Day broadcast.
Newsreader Slammed For Mistakenly Announcing The Pope Had Died During A Live Christmas Broadcast-‘Excuse Me’
It is no secret that the Pope is not getting any younger, by virtue of the fact that he is 94-years-old. While that might be true, the last thing that people expected to hear was his death.
This was especially true given that the Pope had been giving a Christmas Day speech in the Vatican. And as part of that speech, the Pope was encouraging leaders around the world to make the Covid-19 vaccine available “to those most in need.”
And in an act of extreme embarrassment, as shown in the video here, Kylie concluded her reporting by stating the following: “His [the Pope] death was announced” after which she stated: “Excuse me,” once she realised her error.
This was immediately picked up by social media, and lots of people had observations about what they had seen. Unsurprisingly, the comments ranged from laughter to complete shock.
One person on Twitter wrote: “If the pope dies in the next six hours, the police will knocking on ITV news’ door,” while another person stated: “Nah, he’s dead, I witnessed his murder yesterday.”
The news network has yet to comment on this, which is understandable for the following reasons. First of all, there has been enough embarrassment caused by this public gaffe and by commenting, it is only going to create further media scrutiny that they would rather do without.
Secondly, in any event, the newsreader immediately held her hands up and corrected the error once she knew that it had been made. Thirdly, there has not been a lot of outrage to this which is why the story is likely to die down very quickly.
What this story has ironically shown is that working on Christmas Day is perhaps not the best thing to do. While it is not clear what the newsreader had on her mind, one thing for sure is that her Christmas will never be the same again.
