Maurice Benard’s State of Mind: Bryton James On Childhood Stardom, Music, And More – Plus A Touching Tribute

Maurice Benard’s state of Mind brought yet another fun episode with an actor this writer isn’t too familiar with. At least, as an adult. This writer doesn’t follow The Young and the Restless, so there was no clue what was in store. Let’s take a look at some highlights of this fun and engaging chat. Which also, by the way, had a disclaimer with it.

Maurice Benard’s state of Mind brings a surprise

So, Maurice Benard’s state of Mind has featured a lot of soap stars, and we did see some clips of Bryton James, who plays Devon Hamilton on the series. However, we had no clue at the time he was someone somewhat known to us.

If you haven’t heard of it, there was a sitcom in the ’80s/’90s called Family Matters. It was a spin-off, of Perfect Strangers, another ABC sitcom. When Maurice joked about him playing Steve Urkel (Jaleel White), we thought he was just playing. But then we looked the actor up and realized he was once known as Bryton McClure. He played Richie Crawford on the sitcom, which was one of the funny TV moments for us.

See, his mother on the show, Telma Hopkins (Rachel Baines Crawford), left. However, James’ character stayed with the Winslow family. The character’s departure seemed mostly glossed over, despite her son still living with the family. Although, it appears she guested on the series during its last season.

More surprises with Maurice Benard’s state of Mind

Another big surprise in the conversation was that he was somewhat close to Michael Jackson. The actor starred in a commercial Jackson was a part of, but never got to meet him. Through a Family Matters connection, he was able to send a letter to the singer, who wrote back. The pair continued to keep in touch and Jackson apparently took in interest in making sure James was enjoying his experience in the entertainment industry.

This led to some talk about his own experience visiting Jackson’s ranch and how he had another connection to the singer. It also led to some singing and more talk about the singer and his life. Seriously, check it out. You’ll love hearing more about this and the sitcom.

Maurice Benard’s state of Mind: Sharing

So, like other episodes, James turned the tables on Benard a bit, asking him some questions about his breakdown and what made him want to quit General Hospital at one point. Check it out to see how Benard responded. Besides that, they traded stories about changing their names.

James had a very personal reason for wanting to do so, while Benard did it for professional reasons. It was fun to see the pair open up to each other about so many things, as well as James’ childhood stardom, James’ other career, and why he considers Y&R his first real acting job.

Maurice Benard’s state of Mind: Touching tribute

During the chat about his work on Y&R, Kristoff St. John (Neil Winters) came up. This led Benard to discuss the late actors’ challenges and how he wished he’d known St. John better. Benard wanted to know what James observed during the time he worked with St. John. It was a touching part of the conversation that brought Maurice Benard’s State of Mind back to its main focus—mental health.

While the actor was young when he first worked with St. John, as time went on, St. John would open up more to him. Despite the dark turn the conversation took, they did end it on a positive note by saying how current events have helped to bring more awareness to mental health issues. We do agree, and look forward to seeing what Benard will do next to help those struggling.
