For those fans of Jeffree Star’s who are interested, there seems to be an interesting item that has popped up on his website for sale recently, no, it’s not a makeup item, rather it’s his other business, he also makes paraphanalia for those who imbibe in the occasional toke, and one design in particular caught one Twitter user’s eye – apparently the new grinders on his website look exactly like the old pumpkin pails that McDonald’s used to give out in the late 80’s and early 90’s around Halloween.
McDonald’s would do a happy meal promotion every year and they would give out their happy meals in plastic pails instead of the colorfully printed cardboard boxes. A lot of 80’s and 90’s kids remember them (I know I sure do) and quite possibly had more than one if they were lucky enough to go to McDonald’s more than once a month (or perhaps if they had siblings).
Did Jeffree Star rip off McDonald’s?
The pails came in three patterns, an orange pumpkin, a white ghost, and a green witch, and they all glowed in the dark. One twitter user posted a picture of the old McDonald’s advertisement side by side with a screenshot of the products on the website and said, “Why do they look so familiar though?”
It was at first speculated that this was actually a collab between Jeffree Star and McDonald’s but McDonald’s is considered a family friendly brand and Jeffree Star’s product is decidedly not family friendly.
So it is now speculated that he either got permission to use these designs, which is not hard to imagine considering that Jeffree Star, even with all his cancellations, is still worth $40M and that can buy you the rights to just about anything at the end of the day.
However, some people aren’t putting it past Jefree to simply copy the designs, but considering how vocal he’s been about big companies ripping off smaller creators in the past and how he hates it? It just kind of doesn’t seem on-brand for him.
The thing is, McDonald’s probably doesn’t exclusively own the rights to generic pumpkin, ghost, and witch designs and Jeffree probably used a different designer to make a similar thing.
This happens more often than you would think, and that’s probably the case here. Although if the grinders claim to glow in the dark as well, then there might be a little case of copyright infringement. (So far… it doesn’t look like it though.) Stay tuned!!!
