Turn. That. Television. Off. There’s a new report that says your child should not be watching the hit Netflix series “Squid Game,” according to Common Sense Media. That’s because of the amount of gore and violence that is portrayed in the hit South Korean fictional drama. Here’s what you need to know.
“Squid Game,” the massively popular dystopian Korean drama, which was written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, is about hundreds of cash-strapped contestants accept an invitation to compete in children’s games for a tempting prize, but the stakes are deadly.
Your Child Should Not Be Watching Squid Game, According To Common Sense Media
In the series, each character competing in the games has a problem at home. In one challenge, the characters are told to run towards a disturbing mannequin after it calls out ‘green light’ and must stop when ‘red light’ is shouted. If caught moving, the player is shot dead.
Yet, Common Sense Media, which rates shows based on their age appropriateness, says that the violence on “Squid Game” is “very intense.”
“Characters are systematically tortured and killed for the sadistic pleasure of a game master. Adults have sex, and there are threats of sexual violence: Women are grabbed by the hair and beaten,” the website notes. “Themes concerning the highs one gets from gambling, winning, or conning money are a main focus.”
If that weren’t enough, Doctors at the Child Mind Institute recommend that no child should watch “Squid Game,” regardless of whether parents are watching with them.
“The level of violence is horrifying — more than most shows,” said David Anderson, head of School and Community Programs at the Child Mind Institute, in a statement. “It’s a murder fest with the premise that out of over 400 participants, there can only be one survivor.”
