If you grew up in the ‘80s, especially as a young girl, you know the name Debbie Gibson. To this day, the singer/songwriter holds the record for being the youngest artist to write, perform, and produce a #1 hit. That was “Foolish Beat” off her debut, Out of the Blue. Gibson followed up with Electric Youth, which also saw big success. But the years since have seen Gibson out of the pop star spotlight. Let’s talk about what she’s been up to, her return to the pop scene, and her thoughts on Britney Spears.
Where’s Debbie Gibson?
So, for DebHeads, Gibson fans, we’ve been aware of her post teen pop life. After Anything in Possible, Gibson made her musical debut in Les Miz, which turned into a long run on Broadway. This includes playing Sandy in the stage production of Grease. She’s also starred in Sci-fi movies, Hallmark movies, and recently toured with New Kids of the Block in 2019. Their Mixtape Tour featured the group as well as several other popular acts from the time, including fellow teen pop star Tiffany. While the New Kids are getting ready to do it again with some other acts, Gibson’s focusing on her new release and something else.
Debbie Gibson returns
While Gibson continued to release low-key while doing Broadway, she hasn’t had a full album of original material in twenty years. That changed when Gibson released The Body Remembers. The album mixes throwback pop sounds with modern sound. It’s also her first time an original album wasn’t written entirely by Gibson, with the exception of a cover song on Think With Your Heart.
Our stand outs for the album include the title track, which talks about how a song can suddenly bring back a memory, inspiring an emotional/physical response. We also love “Strings”, which talks about the need for love without strings attached and the song, “Legendary”. This one kind of makes us think of her song “One Step Ahead” from Anything is Possible as far as the lyrics talking about choosing to be legendary over ordinary.
Debbie Gibson on momagers and #FreeBritney
It’s no secret to fans her mother, Diane Gibson, was a huge part of getting Gibson out there. However, recently, she revealed they’d parted ways professionally while still being on good terms in an interview with Today.
Said Gibson of her early years, “I had the most tenacious and slightly insane — in a good way — mother, and had it not been for her I don’t know that my music would have seen the light of day.”
Soon the talked turned to fellow teen pop star, Britney Spears. She revealed her sympathy for the singer and how she’d gotten messages to her through her old management. Ultimately, though, she didn’t really give any advice as she didn’t want to assume Spears would need/want it.
She reflected on the position Britney and others in the industry are in as well. Said Gibson, “It’s a crazy thing we do in this country, build people up and then tear them down. I hope and pray that on the other side of gaining her freedom she can regain all of her stability and creativity and thrive again. I watch her dance videos (on social media) and she’s using that art as a therapeutic way to get through life.”
We have to say we totally agree and hope the same for Spears. We also can’t wait to see what’s next for Gibson, as she’s recently headlined a Vegas show with NKOTB member Joey McIntyre. They even re-recorded her song “Lost in Your Eyes” as a duet for The Body Remembers as well as performing it together during the 2019 mixtape tour. Check out the interview linked above to see more on what she had to say about these and more.
