Adele Laurie Blue Adkins fans were excited when they learned the singer/songwriter would be releasing a new track. After six years without new material, the singer finally released a new track, “Easy on Me.” The song is from her upcoming album, 30. It seems Adele is keeping a trend going, as her previous albums were an age as well. This time, she’ll be calling it that because she says that’s the age when her life fell apart. Let’s talk the song and some of what she’s been saying about it.
Adele is back
The song was released to the singers YouTube account on October 14th and has already earned over three million views. It seems the fans are pretty much in her corner, too, with over 168 thousand people liking the video, compared to the over 1 thousand that disliked it on the platform. So, what do we think?
We remember an interview coming out where the headline mentioned her talking about a new sound. So far, we’re not hearing much new here. It’s an emotional, piano-based ballad that deals with pain. So, pretty familiar territory for any Adele fan. However, we are going to go on record as being on the “like” side. The vocals are still on point after her absence, and we liked what she had to say.
The song opens strong when Adele sings,
“I know there’s no hope in these waters,
But I can’t bring myself to swim
When I am drowning in this silence.”
While the song is ultimately a lost love song, the words can apply to so many situations, and that’s one of the things we love about it. There’s a part in the chorus where she talks about how she was still a child and she didn’t get a chance to feel the world around her. Name us one person who hasn’t made a mistake when they were teens or in their ‘20s this can’t apply to. We’ll wait…
But there’s a very specific situation she’s talking about and an intention behind this new release.
Adele comes clean
In a recent interview with MSM.com, the singer talked about her divorce and the effect it had on her son, as well as her relationship to him. She recalled getting some tough questions she didn’t quite know how to answer. So, she let the music talk. The song and upcoming record is being described as her open letter to the child so that he can listen and understand later on.
We can definitely relate to this feeling, to an extent. While we’re not much for being ultra public with emotional things, we do have a tendency to use music as a way of releasing emotions and healing wounds. So, what else did she have to say?
Adele gets a thumbs down?
In another interview with Yahoo!News, she spoke about the reaction she got to the track initially. It seems she previewed bits for several friends, who were less than enthusiastic. Said the singer, “I was saying the other day that I sent a snippet of me singing it as I was writing it to three of my closest friends here and one didn’t like it, the other one was like, ‘Well, yeah, maybe, keep trying though,’ and the other one was, ‘I’m busy working.’ So that was the perfect response for me.”
We sort of love that. It’s helpful to have people who won’t just fawn all over everything you send them. However, the reactions of fans has been very different. On the official music video, the singer has over two million likes on the video, as compared to over one thousand dislikes out of over 56 million views.
One fan commented on the video, “If you ever tried remixing an Adele song you might know that when you put a tuner on her raw vocal you can see actual magic, she has surgical precision with her voice and when you see it you just go wow.”
Another fan added, “Adele is one of the few artists nowadays that keeps me believing there’s good music still.”
We’ll be curious to see how the song and upcoming album does long-term, as well as if there will be any tracks that surprise listeners by bringing something completely different to the table than what we’re used to.
