Once Netflix put out the hit show, The Queen’s Gambit, fans were going crazy about female chess players and there was soon a lot of talk about the game once again. Nona Gaprindashvili, who is a female chess grandmaster, has been playing competitively since the 1960s and she has played against men and women.

She is suing the network and the show for making the show after her, but they have misrepresented her with her success. She is now suing them for defamation.

    ‘Netflix’: The Show’s Plot

The Queen’s Gambit is all about a female chess player who makes it big in the sport. It follows her career and in the show, she is named Beth Harmon. The problem that Nona sees with the show is that she is the only woman in this male-dominated sport. The wins and loses that Harmon has are there to make her look more impressive as a chess player.

In the last episode of the series, Harmon is in Moscow playing a big tournament. The announcer says to the players, “There’s Nona Gaprindashvili, but she’s the female world champion and has never faced men.” Nona had face plenty of men in her days playing chess and never wanted the press to make her feel less than her worth in the sport. She ended up defeating seven men in 1968 alone and she was even written about in the New York Times.

Nona, who is 80-years old now, filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles and says the show is spreading a “devastating falsehood, undermining and degrading her accomplishments before an auideice of many millions.” Nona is asking that Netflix remove any references made to her in the show and she is asking for $5 million in damages.

The documents in the court are 25 pages long and continue with, “Netflix brazenly and deliberately lied about Gaprindashvili’s achiemets for the cheap and cynical purpose of ‘heightening the drama’. They have humiliated the one real woman trail blazer who had actually faced and defeated men on the world stage in the same era.” The show also calls her Russian, but she is actually from Georia.

Nona began to play chess when she was a teenager and worked really hard to get all of her wins and get her name out in the chess world. The Queen’s Gambit has always claimed to be fiction, but by using Nona’s name, they have crossed a line that Nona wants fixed.
