Sofia Vergara has opened up on her prior scare with thyroid cancer that could have been life-threatening.
Sofia Vergara Opens Up On Her Previous Thyroid Cancer Diagnosis
It has been two decades since Sofia was first diagnosed with cancer, but the memories surrounding it continue to live with her to this day. After all, her career could have ended at that point, at a time where she was just trying to make a name for herself in the acting industry.
In a ‘Stand up to Cancer’ appeal, she said: “My doctor felt a lump in my neck. They did a lot of tests and finally told me that I had thyroid cancer. When you’re young, and you hear that word — cancer — your mind goes to so many places.”
The news was very hard to take for several reasons. First of all, she had just moved to Miami in order to get a big career break. Naturally, that diagnosis got in the way of auditions and her desire to make it in showbiz. Not only that, but she was also looking after her ten-year-old son at the time.
And yet, she remained calm by seeking the support of family and medical professionals. She added: “I tried not to panic, and I decided to get educated. I read every book and found out everything I could about it. I was fortunate to have caught it early and have the support of my doctors and, most importantly, my family.” And things turned out well in the end, as Sofia managed to get her thyroid better.
While some of the cancer still remained, she is on medication in order to keep it under control. That is why she has become an advocate for cancer research.
She is hoping that she can serve as an example to others who are going through similar problems. She stated: “I learned a lot during that time, not just about thyroid cancer, but I also learned that in times of crisis, we’re better together. We have all witnessed the power of coming together just this past year.” Sofia was very brave in opening up on her story, which will no doubt inspire millions around the world.
