The “Black Widow” actress is suing Disney for breach of contract with the company simultaneously released the movie both in theaters and Disney+ on the same day.
Her lawsuit argues that the streaming numbers affect the box office, which in turn affects her contractual backend, prompting her to receive less in compensation than what she would have had if the movie were only released in theaters. Here’s what you need to know.

Scarlett said in the suit that her agreement with Disney’s Marvel Entertainment guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release, and her salary was based in large part on the box-office performance of her film.
The actress claims in the docs that she agreed her compensation for starring in Black Widow would be largely based on box office receipts generated by the film, and agreed to a theatrical release exclusive to movie theaters in order to maximize her pay.
Scarlett claims Disney violated its pledge by releasing Black Widow on Disney+ on July 9th, which was the same day that it was released in theaters. And now Emma Stone is reportedly weighing her options and looking to following in Scarlett’s footsteps with a lawsuit of her own.
She is reportedly considering suing Disney over the release of “Cruella” on Disney+. The villainous origin story premiered simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ on May 28, utilizing the $29.99 Premier Access feature.
According to ScreenRant, The Hollywood Reporter Editor Matt Belloni hinted in his exclusive newsletter that the “Cruella” star might surprise everyone with an announcement of a lawsuit of her own. “Emma Stone, star of Cruella, is said to be weighing her options,” he wrote, adding that Disney is “notoriously difficult to deal with” in circumstances like these.
