Alecia Beth Moore, known professionally as Pink has offered her support, financially, to the Norwegian Olympic female beach handball team in their battle against wearing bikini bottoms during games.
On Saturday, the 41 year old songstress took to Twitter, offering to pay the US $175-per-athlete disciplinary fines the team have incurred after refusing to wear the regulation, teeny-tiny uniform in competition.
Pink Has Offered To Pay Norwegian Olympic Team’s Fines After They Refuse to Wear Sexist Uniforms
“I’m VERY proud of the Norwegian female beach handball team FOR PROTESTING THE VERY SEXIST RULES ABOUT THEIR ‘uniform,'” the 41-year old Grammy winner Tweeted. “The European handball federation SHOULD BE FINED FOR SEXISM. Good on ya, ladies. I’ll be happy to pay your fines for you. Keep it up.”
Pink was not the only celebrity supporting the defiant Norwegian team. Tennis legend Billie Jean King also spoke out in support of the beach handball team, calling out the “sexualization” of women athletes. King also pointed out, “The men’s team wears shorts.”
Currently the female standard uniform does not allow the bottoms to cover ‘more than 10cm on any sides.’
But why?
The European Handball Federation have imposed the fines to the 10 member squad who competed in shorts, citing “improper clothing.” The Norwegian Handball Federation, however are supporting their national team and have also offered to pay the team’s fine.
Overwhelming support has flooded in for the Norwegian Olympic female beach handball team from all corners of the globe.
“We are very proud about making a statement in the bronze final by playing in shorts instead of required bikini bottoms! We are overwhelmed by the attention and support from all over the world!” the team posted on Instagram, along with a series of photos of the players competing. “Thank you so much to all the people who support us and help spread the message! We really hope this will result in a change of this nonsense rule.
