‘The Bachelorette’ spoilers find that Monday’s episode took viewers, and the contestants on an emotional rollercoaster.
Controversy has been the name of the game when it comes to ABC staple- The Bachelor and its spin-offs. The latest headline to plague the show is that it has remained cookie-cutter and stale, with no big transformations to keep viewers engaged.
One of the tried and true fundamental elements of the show is watching the contestants sit down with the lead after knowing them for approximately 3.5 seconds and spilling their guts, and past traumas, all over international television.
‘The Bachelorette’ Spoilers: An Emotional Ride of an Episode…Maybe Change IS in the Air?
As longtime viewers of the reality competition, we’ve heard everything from busting boyfriends in the act and chasing them around a room with the business end of a stiletto to being forced to nibble on lipstick to keep hunger pains away when growing up an orphan in Russia.
Monday’s episode saw not just one, but a whole group of men spill their deep dark secrets in a ‘safe space’ which was filmed and televised to the millions that make up Bachelor Nation.
Oh, and there was one jerk who dug his own grave- outwardly admitting he was “there for the wrong reasons” with such finesse that you could only stare at the screen agog. (Anyone else imagine Karl doing an “I told you so” dance, roseless and at home?)
Lead, Katie Thurston herself divulged an emotional story about not giving consent and the victim blaming she put on herself after the traumatic sexual assault that left at home viewers hashtagging Me Too in solidarity …or volunteering to rub the SOB out.
Not to be outdone, widowed father, Michael who was not on the pour-your-heart-out group date, opened up to some of the bros about his wife’s death from breast cancer. This was actually the most poignant scene of the uber emotional episode as Michael was not forced into relaying his story.
It wasn’t even the specifics (though utterly heartbreaking) that stood out, but the fact that three bros took a break from working out and began sharing stories and emotions.
The normalizing of men supporting men- I mean, who didn’t get the feels when a hand was reached out to Michael, squeezing his leg in a silent “I got you, Bro”- as they chose to be vulnerable with each other was the freshest breath of air viewers have seen on the franchise in a very long time.
We’re not saying this single gesture is enough to rebuild a franchise that is becoming more humdrum by the day…but perhaps there is hope that something old can be made new again, the angle just has to be found.
Until then, The Bachelor and its subsets will continue losing viewership…time to step up and be vulnerable about your shortcomings, ABC!
The Bachelorette airs (to a much smaller audience) Mondays on ABC at 8pm ET.
