Literary Critic Claire Allfree Slams Meghan Markle’s Book As ‘Semi-Literate’

Meghan Markle is getting no love from the literary world. In fact, her new book, The Bench, has been widely criticized by many people from all over the world but was completely ravaged by literary critic Claire Allfree, who calls it “semi-literate.” Here’s what she has to say.

The Telegraph’s Claire Allfree held nothing back in her one-star review. A number of critics have panned the book for its non-traditional messaging, questionable grammar and tone deaf rhythm.

“Poor Harry’s role in this marriage is to sit on his bench holding the baby while Meghan gets on and conquers the world, one act of compassion at a time,” wrote Allfree.

Just this past week Meghan Markle had addressed the book’s progressive message, telling NPR in an interview that The Bench creates images showing the softer side of fathers.

The Bench was released on June 8 in partnership with Random House Children’s Books in the US, Tundra Books and Puffin in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa.

While the Duchess of Sussex is enjoying her Stateside success with her first ever children’s book as it made the top spot of the NY Times Children’s Bestsellers’ List, The Bench is already considered a huge flop back in the UK. It sold a little over 3,000 copes during its first week. In comparison, The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman sold over 28,000 copies in the same time period.

Back in May, the Duchess of Sussex explained that her new book was inspired by a poem that she wrote for Harry shortly after the birth of their son Archie Harrison back in May of 2019. The young tot turns 2 this coming Thursday.

“The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born,” Meghan said in the press release from publisher Random House Children’s Books. “That poem became this story.”
