Allison Mack has come out and apologised for her role in recruiting women to be a part of the NXIVM sex cult during her sentencing hearing.

The actress, who is best known for portraying Chloe Sullivan on Smallville, shook the world with the news that she had been working with the cult’s leader Keith Raniere to recruit high profile females under the guise of self-help and empowerment classes.

But once it transpired that members were all being blackmailed and subjected to inhumane treatment, Alison sought to put her wrongs right by making a statement of deep regret. In her court statement, she remarked: “It is now of paramount importance for me to say, from the bottom of my heart, I am so sorry to those who have been harmed.”

The news was hard to take, given the popularity Alison had with the fans of Smallville. And yet, it was a sign of just how easily people can be manipulated to join a cult. Alison admitted how she initially was taken in by Keith’s teachings, but rather than questioning whether they were moral, she threw herself in without considering the consequences.

The statement added: “I believed, whole-heartedly, that his [Keith] mentorship was leading me to a better, more enlightened version of myself. I devoted my loyalty, my resources, and, ultimately, my life to him. This was the biggest mistake and greatest regret of my life.”

Despite Alison’s expression of remorse, she has angered some people by requesting that the judge not give her any time in jail. That is not going to sit well with the victims who have suffered immense trauma as a result. Not only that, given the amount of evidence that has been presented against her, such a request is almost impossible.

Keith, for his part, was sentenced to 120 years in jail. If Alison were to be convicted, then she could be looking at a similar timeframe. Time will tell how it all plays out, but as for the apology, it is not going to make the calls for Alison to face a life behind bars disappear.

Her actions were deplorable, and the victims will demand a strong punishment. If you liked reading this article, then check out our other features on the Daily Soap Dish. Please also visit TVRocker for all of the latest exciting news on all of your favourite daytime television soaps.
