‘General Hospital (GH)’ spoilers reveal Peter August (Wes Ramsey) is no more. On June 4th, Steve Burton (Jason Morgan) and Bradford Anderson (Damian Spinelli) released a “That’s Awesome” episode talking about the man behind the character. This got quite a reaction from some fans, both good and bad. Let’s take a look at what they said, the reaction, and our take.
ABC ‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: The intro
Before getting into the conversation, the duo reminded fans they’re currently on tour and working out a lot of details. However, they took time a few days ago to film this episode, which was before we knew Peter’s fate.
They spoke a bit about the great person Wes is and how much they enjoy working with him. For Anderson, he really enjoyed getting to show a slightly different side to Spinelli. In fact, he went on a bit about how he couldn’t remember his character ever being so openly in disgust of another person. Personally, we loved those moments, too.
Another thing they stressed was how different it is to do an arc on a show versus a shorter project. General Hospital spoilers reveal Peter evolved somewhat over time. He tried to become a better person, but kept getting pulled back to a darker side until he gave up all together.
As they explained, a lot of times they have no idea where a character is going and sometimes, you’ll be filming the big climax and have no idea that’s what’s happening. So, it sounds like a lot of instinct and discovery going on.
ABC ‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: The reaction
Of course, any time you’re talking about a show at all, there’s going to be dissenting opinions. Especially with a character like Peter. He was definitely divisive, even though the bulk of the opinion was in the “get rid of him” category as far as we could see. Fans took to this video to let their own thoughts be known.
One said, “I love Wes (he’s so adorable) and I actually really like the Peter character. Wish Faison was still around for double the villain trouble!”
“Great show guys. I have to admit I had really high hopes for Peter. When he thought he was Ana’s son he was really trying to overcome his connection with Faison. His love which turned to obsession for Maxi was his driving force to be a good person but it became his downfall. Also unfortunate him trying to cover up all the things he previously also lead him into the downward spiral until we have the monster we see today. Wes has played this character development brilliantly,” said another
“I agree, Wes is a sweetheart in real life! I met him at the last Graceland GH event, and his smile is genuine!!!! Steve is just like he is on these podcasts!” enthused another fan.
We especially liked this one comment, which said, “I watched Wes on Guiding Light, he seems like a genuinely sweet, kind man. I can tell he takes great care in his scenes and work. But I think for many viewers – some characters have a shorter onscreen life span. The character of Peter/Heinrich feels like a Faison or Jerry Jacks, in that – the character isn’t meant to be this long lasting mainstay on the show. They come in, wreak havoc, play a big sinister story arc, then go. Whether to jail, or escape, or die. Peter is that kind of character to me. I think people also did not respond well to the history change that Anna was his mother -but then they switched it to Alex. On the flip side, one fan said, “People saying Wes is a great actor I’m not saying he is not I just think his talents is better for plays as he overacts as Peter and isn’t suited for the soaps world”
“I’m sorry, but I just don’t care how nice Wes is. It’s nice to know he’s apparently a really good guy. But my only concerns are his acting and character. And his acting hasn’t been good. It’s been really bad and cartoonish since peter decided to accept his darkness. And the character is one of the worst ever in the history of the show for me,” added another.
ABC ‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Our take
After watching the video, we couldn’t help but feel this was more than just a goodbye to an actor/character video. Given they invited fans to revisit an old “Seven Questions” segment featuring Ramsey, it felt as though they were trying to make sure the man and the character were separated.
It kind of makes sense. There are plenty of actors who’ve fallen victim to an evil character. Or they’ve been so associated with a character people can’t see them as anything else. This felt like them trying to help that distinction along.
As for the character, we agree his time was way beyond up. There were many times it looked as though he was going down, but he just kept coming back. And at some point, you can’t keep that going for much longer without making it unbelievable/comical.
For example, Spike (James Marsters) on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He was amusing/entertaining through Season 4. After that, you couldn’t help but wonder what logical reason these people have for letting him stick around. And it definitely felt as though Peter needed to go finally.
We agree, also, there were times we were less than impressed with a moment from the actor. However, we did overall enjoy his time on the show and think he definitely went out on a high note. That scene between Peter and Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms) was gripping and that was on both of the actors.
Ramsey, in particular, impressed with a look in that scene after Maxie got done going on about how she hated him being around. The pain was genuine, and it definitely should earn them both some recognition next awards seasons.
