Is this the invisible contract that Prince Harry was talking about between the royal family and the British press? After the news broke that Prince Michael of Kent is being accused of using his royal status to sell privileged access to Russia’s Vladimir Putin, it seems like the official royal rota of journalists who cover all things about the British monarchy have suddenly gone quiet. And yes, social media has definitely noticed, too. Here’s what you need to know.
Reports say that Prince Michael offered his royal endorsement in exchange for a $200,000 fee during a virtual meeting and was happy to use his home in Kensington Palace as a backdrop for a speech promoting a fake South Korean gold company. He is also being accused of selling royal access to Putin’s regime.
The Royal Rota Ignoring Prince Michael of Kent’s Putin Scandal: Is This The Invisible Contract Prince Harry Was Talking About?
But that doesn’t seem to matter much to any of the journalists that cover the royal family, as it is far more important to slam Meghan Markle about the things she does or says on a daily basis than to cover allegations far more serious like this.
During his interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry hinted that the royal family and the British media do have an invisible contract in which they do each other favors. Keeping this little scandal out of the headlines might be one of them.
Of course, it didn’t take very long for many royal fans and critics alike for pointing out the royal rota’s hypocrisy in covering all things Meghan Markle but ignoring a story like this, or at least not giving it the same energy they give the Sussexes.
Some critics took to their social media accounts to write, “This should be a way bigger scandal than it is. and all the royal rota (with exception of omid) aren’t reporting on it. Thats the invisible contract for you. It goes as far as protecting the 25th in line but apparently couldn’t be reinforced to protect a 6th in line’s wife,” along with, “Piers Morgan actually retweeted it. He’s getting called out for not giving it as much energy as he gives H&M hating though. Maybe somebody forgot to thank him this month.”
Another critic wrote, “Don’t be surprised. Andrew, Michael, probably Charles, they are all trading their royal connections and doing shady business. This is who they are. And that’s why they support each other. This isn’t too surprising. It’s been known/hinted at for years that Prince Michael used his royal status/Russian heritage for his own means. Charles allegedly call him and his wife the “Rent-a-Kents” because of their willingness to “sell themselves” to the highest bidder.”
So far Buckingham Palace has not made any comments about the matter.
