Oprah Winfrey has done an interview or two in her time. Some might think Tom Cruise jumping on a couch and gushing about how much he loves (now ex) Katie Holmes was one of the most shocking moments they’ve seen come out of an Oprah interview, but according to the grand dame of interviews, Meghan Markle’s comments were a ‘hold my beer’ moment for Mr. Cruise.
Oprah was recently on the other side of the interview couch (not the one with Cruise’s footprints all over it), speaking with Entertainment Tonight alum, Nancy O’Dell on her new streaming show: TalkShopLive. She opened up about her infamous interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and her shock at Meghan’s candor.
Even Oprah Winfrey is Surprised the Sussexes “Went There”
“What? You’re going there? You’re going all the way there,” Oprah told Nancy, describing her inner thought process when the talk turned to racism, specifically “the firm’s” reaction to the potential color of then-unborn son, Archie’s skin.
The March aired polarizing interview continues to have ramifications with royal relationships strained and public opinions split over all that was divulged through the 2 hour interview.
“I had no idea that it would have the reverberating impact that it has had and continues to have,” Oprah admitted to Nancy. “Our shared intention was the truth. They wanted to be able to tell their story and tell it in such a way that allowed them to be as truthful as possible.”
She spoke of how frank the Sussexes were throughout the sit down and believes an interview only becomes so powerful, “when you have somebody else who is willing to be as open, as vulnerable, as truthful as they were.”
Lady O also detailed the level of secrecy surrounding the interview, and how she enforced a “no leaks” policy with the crew members. She says this was to ensure none of the couple’s remarks could be “misconstrued.”
