If you’ve grown up with the muppets, from Sesame Street to The Muppet Show, then you’ll recognize the name Jim Henson, even if you were born long after he was alive. The muppet creator was a Mississippi native whose claim to fame was creating all of the muppet characters, which were a childhood staple in most American households when us first-gen millenials were growing up.
They’re still around, of course now Sesame Street has moved from PBS to HBO (at least the new episodes have) and the most recent show “Muppets Now” is on Disney Plus.
Disney working on new Jim Henson biopic
Now, over at Disney, a biopic about the man behind all the puppetry is slowly coming to life. It will follow his journey to try and convince TV execs that the muppets were a good idea. They were first created in the 1950’s for TV commercials (An interesting factoid that I had no idea about, and I know a lot about muppet trivia), then slowly they had their own specials, and then that slowly morphed into their own shows like Sesame Street and The Muppet Show and even their own SNL show, and finally movies.
This particular biopic will have daughter, Lisa Henson, at the producer’s helm. Henson himself died in 1993 at the age of 53 after a particularly nasty bout of pneumonia.
Looks like this isn’t the first biopic in existence, back in 2009, there was a biopic script written by Christopher Weekes and bought by the Jim Henson company. Disney has owned the Jim Henson company since 2004 and it’s kind of amazing that there hasn’t been anything done until now, but I guess they had their hands full, creating their own streaming platform and all.
The real Henson afficianados will be eager to see this biopic, we wonder if there’ll be any new, juicy information that we never knew about in the biopic or will it be stuff we already know? It’s always interesting to watch someone who came from humble beginnings. Either way, we trust Disney, we know they’ll do Jim Henson the justice he deserves. Stay tuned!!!
