Bravo’s smash reality series Below Deck is spawning even more spin-offs as ratings soar. Already the Below Deck franchise has two successful spin-offs, Below Deck: Sailing Yacht and Below Deck: Mediterranean. Now NBCUniversal is said to be in the early stages of developing two more Below Deck series: one set around Australia and one set around Iceland.

While the Australian based season is being produced by the same team behind the original show and its two existing spinoffs, the Iceland based series will be helmed (so to speak) by a different production company. This is not an unusual practice and has been adopted within the Real Housewife and Love and Hip Hop franchises.

The reality serials chronicle the lives of crew members living and working on board  superyachts available for charter. With the guests changing weekly, there are always new characters and new dynamics to watch. The crew also changes from time to time, with new relationships forging and crumbling. The very confined living space is an added layer to tensions that viewers love to watch.

Of course, the yachts will always be sailing in jaw-dropping locations, adding to the romance of sailing, but then the living quarters loom and the at-home audience sees the golden touches tarnish.

“It’s really an Upstairs, Downstairs or the reality version of Downton Abbey,” said production company, 51 Minds President, Christian Sarabia.

On these small vessels, the stairs separating the haves from the have nots are very few…and are often just a thin door!

Below Deck launched in 2013 with its eighth season recently wrapping. Below Deck: Mediterranean has aired five seasons and the Below Deck: Sailing Yacht, season two is currently airing Mondays at 9pm ET on Bravo. Season two sees Captain  Glenn Shephard sailing the Parsifal III through the Dalmatian Coast off Croatia. Season two was filmed during the pandemic.
