Episode 4 in Demi Lovato’s youtube docuseries, Dancing with the Devil, chronicles her struggle with addiction and it is an eye-opener.

She had fellow music industry colleague Christina Aguilera do an interview on the docuseries, as well as comedian Will Ferrell, and music legend, Elton John, who had Demi do a duet with him on “Don’t go breakin’ my heart” (This is one piece of music phenomena I have not heard and will have to look up later.), Elton says that when you’re young and part of the music industry people don’t expect you to be human, and… from what we’ve seen of this documentary, he speaks the truth.

Fortunately, 2020 was a surprisingly good year for Demi. Granted, she has the resources in order for it to be a good year (and she did acknowledge this), but she says she has been taking a lot of time for herself and growing as a person.

She did say that she hated seeing other people being sick, but the pandemic seemed a little far removed from the plot – and that’s not Demi’s fault – that’s not what this documentary is about. It’s about her struggle and her recovery, so we’ll let her have her moment, but at least she did acknowledge that in this case, she has had some pretty special privileges due to her status.

She also says that in regards to sobriety, while she has not relapsed in regards to hard drugs and alchohol, she says she is what they call, “California Sober” which means, every now and again she tokes up with some weed or has a drink or two.

She says that shutting the door completely doesn’t work for her and that sometimes she just wants something, not to really get textbook definition high with, but to take the edge off. So every now and again she indulges. This approach is deemed controversial by some, and definitely not endorsed by everyone – especially by Elton John, he says you either do sobriety or you don’t, “If you take one pill, you’ll take another one.”

Demi says that she is completely done with hard drugs, however due to the level of control her former team had with her about things – for instance, food – she does not want to shut the door completely to things because she says that if she does that, it just makes her want to open it right back up again.

This approach is definitely not for everyone and any and all recovery should be closely monitored by a physician, but it takes guts to address it publicly as Demi has. We applaud her. Stay tuned!!!
