Celebrity condolences and tributes from the UK and across the world have been pouring in since Buckingham Palace announced the passing of 99 year old on Friday, April 9. Two tributes in particular have been felt by those who are most saddened by the Duke of Edinburgh’s death.
Matt Smith – who portrayed the young Duke in his 20’s, 30’s and early 40’s in the first two series of hit Netflix series The Crown said in part, “I’d like to offer my condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family. Prince Philip was the man. And he knew it. 99 and out, but what an innings. And what style. Thank you for your service old chap – it won’t be the same without you.”
Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies Pay Tribute to The Man They Played in The Crown: the Late Prince Philip
Tobias Menzies, who took over as Prince Philip for the third and fourth seasons, portraying the Duke of Edinburgh in his late 40s to his early 60s decided to quote Shakespeare’s As You Like It in his tribute, believing that what Prince Philip would have wanted.
.If I know anything about the Duke of Edinburgh I'm fairly sure he wouldn't want an actor who portrayed him on TV giving their opinion on his life, so I'll leave it to Shakespeare.
"O good old man! how well in thee appears
The constant service of the antique world…"RIP

Matt and Tobias’ statements followed those from the creators of The Crown and Netflix, the streaming platform which airs the Crown, saying ‘Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this sad time.’ And that they were ‘deeply saddened’ by the news of Prince Philip’s passing.
Jonathan Pryce, best known to audiences as High Sparrow in the wildly successful Game of Thrones will be the next actor to step into the Duke’s shoes when season 5 of The Crown returns to Netflix in 2022.
