Madoff was serving a 150-year sentence in federal prison and had been diagnosed with terminal kidney failure. He was expected to have less than 18 months to live, in which he petitioned the courts for an early release from prison. However, the US Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York said his crime was “unprecedented in scope and magnitude” and denied his request.
“Bernard Madoff died Wednesday while serving a 150-year sentence in federal prison. He was 82 years old, and a cause of death was not released.”

Many have tied his story to the saying, “you can’t take it with you when you go”, pointing to all the money had accumulated at one point in time, the lavish life he lived, and all the homes he had purchased. Even after everything he had, when it was his time to go, he didn’t take a thing with him.
Madoff was born on April 29th, 1939 in Queens, New York, and passed just two weeks before his birthday on April 14, 2021, at 82 years old while in prison in Butner, North Carolina.
