All of the Chadwick Boseman fans on Twitter are severely disappointed. If anyone was expecting Boseman to win for his phenomenal performance in ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ then they will be sorely disappointed to find out that he did not, in fact, win the 2021 Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
Instead, it went to Sir Anthony Hopkins, who, at 83, could not attend the event due to COVID concerns. One fan said, “You’re telling me that they ended the show with Best Actor that should have gone to Chadwick and they gave it to Anthony Hopkins WHO WASN’T EVEN THERE?!?!?!”
Chadwick Boseman gets snub at Oscars
Absenita shouldn’t be an issue, seeing as Hopkins wasn’t at the awards show either, but the Oscars really passed up a chance to award his performance posthumously, especially since according to one Twitter user they used his likeness to get coverage for the Oscar swag bags.
That’s little more than a consolation prize to the fas who were really rooting for Chadwick. Some fans threw shade, saying that Hopkins’ performance in “The Father”, the one that got him the win was “A movie that no one saw” ouch! But hey, there was a pandemic going on so that’s hardly Hopkins’ fault.
Fans were saying that the entire show was built around Boseman’s possible win, only for them to be disappointed when it didn’t happen and Hopkins didn’t even show up. One twitter user even said that the ending to the 2021 Oscars was so weird that people were probably calling their cable providers like after the Soprano’s finale. No, folks, it really ended that way!
But at least Netflix honored Boseman in a short called “Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist” which premiered on April 17th and featured one of his co-stars from Ma Rainey, Viola Davis. Of Boseman’s performance, Davis said that they were watching a great artist totally give himself over to the role, and that’s what great artist’s do, they sacrifice themselves.
This award season Boseman had pretty much cleaned up at all the award shows for his performance in ‘Ma Rainey’ for his portrayal of Levee, and there was not a dry eye in the house as his wife, Taylor Simone Ledward accepted all his awards for him, giving powerful speeches. Especially the one at the Golden Globes where she said that he would have thanked God, his family and his ancestors.
But getting back to the Oscars, we’ll all be scratching (and shaking) our heads for a long time over this decision. Stay tuned
