Scarlett Johansson has been very frank on how her controversial moments have led to a successful career.
Scarlett Johansson: ‘I Have Made A Career Out Of’ Controversy
In an interview with Gentlewoman’s magazine, Scarlett laughed off the bad moments in her career. She said: “I’ve made a career out of it.” Scarlett was not wrong. She had infamously made the headlines after she backed the director Woody Allen, despite allegations that he had committed sexual assault. She told the Hollywood Reporter: “I love Woody. I believe him [his innocence], and I would work with him anytime.”
But as time has moved on, Scarlett has viewed some moments differently. She has always been an outspoken person, even if it was to her detriment, and that is unlikely to change. She added: “I’m going to have opinions about things because that’s just who I am. I mean, everyone has a hard time admitting when they’re wrong about stuff, and for all of that to come out publicly, it can be embarrassing.”
Scarlett has felt, though, that the standards placed on actors have been too high. While politicians can continue to make inflammatory remarks and still get paid, Scarlett has questioned why creative actors should be silenced, given that words are their foundations. She continued: “Your job is to reflect our experience to ourselves.
“Your job is to be a mirror for an audience, to be able to have an empathetic experience through art. That is what your job is.” Although Scarlett does have a point, there is equally an argument that this is part of her job, which she has to accept. Not many actors get involved in political movements, but when they do, they are praised. Take for example, Leonardo Di Caprio and his views on the environment.
If Scarlett were to be less bold, she could positively influence things. But for now, she is happy with her acting. She noted: “I don’t think actors have obligations to have a public role in society. Some people want to, but the idea that you’re obligated to because you’re in the public eye is unfair. You didn’t choose to be a politician, you’re an actor.” There is no stopping Scarlett, and do not even think about doing that.
