They also suggested that there were royals behind the scenes who might have been jealous of Meghan and that she also contemplated taking her own life while she was pregnant.

Meghan told Oprah that there were “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he is born.”

While the reaction has so far been varied, one Labour MP is now criticizing the palace and calling for an investigation.

MP Nadia Whittome tweeted: “When Meghan Markle was accused of bullying, Buckingham Palace immediately announced an investigation. Now that Meghan has revealed comments about her child’s skin color, will they investigate racism in the Palace? I won’t be holding my breath.”

Shadow Education Secretary Kate Green added: “Really distressing, shocking and if there are allegations of racism I would expect them to be treated by the palace with the utmost seriousness and fullly investigated.”

Asked if the interview demands a response, she added: “I’m sure the palace will be thinking very carefully about that and I think people will be wondering what will be said but there’s never any excuse in any circumstances for racism. It’s important that action is taken to investigate what are really shocking allegations.”

Children’s minister Vicky Ford said: “There’s no place for racism in our society and we all need to work together to stop it.”

Meghan also admitted that she was feeling suicidal during her time behind the scenes at the palace.

“Look, I was really ashamed to have to say it at the time and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry especially, because I know how much loss he’s suffered,” Meghan said. “But I knew that if I didn’t say that I would do it … and I just didn’t ― I just didn’t want to be alive anymore. And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought.”
