Sandra Miju Oh is lending her clout and voice to the cause as she attended a Stop Asian Hate rally in Pittsburgh on Saturday, following the tragic Atlanta massacre that took eight lives.
The 49-year-old Grey’s Anatomy alum delivered a powerful speech against the bigoted hate and alarmingly rising violence against the American Asian community, saying that she is “proud to be Asian.”
“Pittsburgh, I am so happy and proud to be here with you and thank you to all the organizers for organizing this just to give us an opportunity to be together and to stand together and to feel each other,” Sandra, a first generation Canadian of Korean parents, said. “For many of us in our community, this is the first time we are even able to voice our fear and our anger, and I really am so grateful to everyone willing to listen.”

“I know many of us in our community are very scared and I understand that,” the Killing Eve actress continued, “and one way to get through our fear is to reach out to our communities. I will challenge everyone here, if you see something will you help me?”
Cheers from the crowd quickly turned into the chant “I am proud to be Asian!” that Sandra led.
Local investigators have said that the 21-year-old suspect in the Atlanta massacre cited a sex addiction and targeted the spas as they were “a temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate.” Authorities claim there’s no evidence suggesting the suspect was motivated by race, yet six of the victims were Asian women.
However, Asian hate crimes have been on the rise since the pandemic began, and derogatory terminology spouted by the ex US President such as the “Kung Flu” seemingly gave a green light for spreading the hate and violence.
Several other Asian American celebrities have made their voices as they speak out against the rise of the violence, including Olivia Munn, Jamie Chung and Daniel Dae Kim who appeared at a Congressional hearing, calling out lawmakers who voted against a resolution that condemned anti-Asian violence.
