Demi Lovato says that her overdose has helped put her life in perspective. The chart topper recently opened up about her near-death experience and says that she had to “die in order to wake up” and now that she’s sober, she’s feeling “more joy” than she has ever did before. Here’s what she has to say.
In her docuseries, Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil, Demi said that one the night of her near-fatal overdose back in 2018, she was given heroin laced with fentanyl and the dealer “ended up getting her really high and leaving her for dead.” If that weren’t enough, she was also sexually assaulted.
“I didn’t just overdose. I was taken advantage of,” Demi says in the docuseries. “When they found me, I was naked, blue. I was literally left for dead after he took advantage of me.”
Demi Lovato Says She Had To ‘Die To Wake Up’
Thankfully, Demi has moved on in her life and has put all of her troubles in her past.
“I feel so good,” Demi said in an interview with CBS This Morning. “I feel more joy in my life than I’ve ever felt because I’m not quieting or diminishing any part of myself.”
“I think that my whole life, I was the horse that everyone was leading to the well, and they couldn’t make me drink the water from the well,” she explains. “It wasn’t until this past year that I was able to taste the freedom of the water in the well, because I finally was ready to drink it.”
Demi went on to say that she didn’t have any control over her life at the time.
“But yes, I also needed to grow up and take control,” she shares. “And that’s something I haven’t done until the past two years of my life, which is, I’m now in control of my finances, I’m now in control of the food that I eat, how often I work out …”
“Regardless of what other people may have said or done, my actions put me in the seat that’s in front of you today,” Demi added. “Unfortunately, nobody can answer for my overdose but me.”
