Zack Snyder Won’t Be Paid For HBO Max’s ‘Justice League’ Cut

Zack Snyder, director of the never-before-seen cut of HBO Max’s ‘Justice League’, has never seen the film! Well, at least the cut up and reshot version from Joss Whedon that was released back in 2017. After a family tragedy, Snyder had to step away and was replaced by Marvel’s ‘Avengers’ director Joss Whedon.

After Whedon’s interpretation came out, executive producer Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder (Snyder’s wife and producing partner) told him, “You can never see that movie.” This came by way of Vanity Fair, as the magazine took a deep dive into Zack Snyder’s ‘Justice League’.

In that Vanity Fair interview, Snyder also revealed that the reshoots and post-production cost about $70 million to create his four-hour experience.

Whedon reportedly reshot about 75% of the movie, and his behavior on set has led to allegations of abuse from actor Ray Fisher who portrayed Cyborg. Allegations have also continued outside the DC Universe, but that’s for another article.

An anonymous studio executive told the magazine,

“When we got to see what Joss actually did, it was stupefying. The robber on the rooftop—so goofy and awful. The Russian family—so useless and pointless. Everyone knew it. It was so awkward because nobody wanted to admit what a piece of shit it was.”

Viewers agree and what began as an internet meme has led to a full-blown revamp from Snyder, after #ReleaseTheSnyderCut went viral.

This eventually led to Snyder agreeing to terms for reshoots and a full-blown production, eventually turning into the four-hour event on HBO Max. To do this, however, Snyder had to take a pay cut. Or rather, no pay.

Snyder said in Vanity Fair, “I’m not getting paid. I didn’t want to be beholden to anyone, and it allowed me to keep my negotiating powers with these people pretty strong.”

Snyder’s version of ‘Justice League’ is releasing next month, on March 18th.
