Selena Gomez has some thoughts to share about big tech companies and how she believes that social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Google “failed the American people” during the violent Capitol riots on January 6th. She also thinks these same companies are “cashing in from evil.” Here’s what she has to say.
During an interview with the Associated Press, the chart topper says she thinks social media is to blame for not only the Capitol Riots, but everything else that is wrong in the world today. She said, “This is about truth versus lies and Facebook, Instagram and Big Tech companies have to stop allowing lies to just flow and pretend to be the truth.”
Selena Gomez Calls Out Big Tech Companies For ‘Cashing In From Evil’
Selena added that Facebook has continued to allow “dangerous lies about vaccines and COVID and the U.S. election, and neo-Nazi groups are selling racist products via Instagram.”
During the riots, Selena tweeted the attack resulted from “allowing people with hate in their hearts to use platforms that should be used to bring people together and allow people to build community.”
Back in October, Selena also admitted that the coronavirus triggered her depression. In a discussion panel alongside Vivek Murthy, the former Surgeon General during President Barack Obama’s administration, Selena talked about the importance of focusing on mental health, and especially during challenging times. She also got raw about her own feelings.
“In the beginning I couldn’t deal with it that well. I kind of went into a bit of a depression,” Gomez admits during the talk. “Then I started going into a place where I was writing and being active. It just forced me to have that time. I’ve been able to spend time with those people, those quality people, a lot more than I ever have. Spending a lot more time with my family and I almost feel like I’ve become normalized in this situation that’s not normal.”
