‘Days of Our Lives’ (DOOL) spoilers have found that fans are no strangers to seeing characters with Dissociative Identity Disorder (D.I.D.) on their screens. Could Charlie Dale be the next bad-guy-but-deep-down-he’s-quite-alright Salemite to be suffering from split personalities? DOOL detectives seem to think so. Their proof? Charlie’s glasses.
Whether or not Charlie is wearing his glasses seems to dictate his personality. Glasses on and Charlie is affable, charmingly nerdy and completely in love with Claire Brady (Isabel Durant). Take those glasses off and he’s whacking his mother over the head, gagging her and tying her up out of fear she’ll disclose even more of his (glasses-free) heinous deeds.
‘Days of Our Lives’ Spoilers: What do Charlie Dale’s (Mike Manning) glasses have to do with his personality(ies)?
Already writers are pushing a bit of a sympathy card for Charlie, having his surprised-about-his-existence half-brother Tripp Dalton (Lucas Adams) point out, “I do know that child abuse and neglect is real, and it can make you do violent things… things that you’ll regret for the rest of your life.”
So what does this mean for the future of the character? Maybe Abigail Deveraux DiMera (Marci Miller) can pass along the get out of jail free card she procured after her alter- Gabby Hernandez – not to be confused with Gabi Hernandez (Camila Banus) killed her brother in law Andre DiMera (Thaao Penghlis). Of course, Gabby and Gabi were confused, but I digress.
Abigail isn’t alone. Several forms of psychosis have been blamed for many characters’ bad deeds and eventual redemption. Most notably Ben Weston (Robert Scott Wilson) turning from Necktie Killer to half of super-couple—Cin, romancing and marrying presumed-dead-but-don’t-count-her-out-yet Ciara Brady (Victoria Konefal).
And to digress a little further, you have to marvel at the intersecting storylines that led to one of Ben’s murder victims- Will Horton (Chandler Massey) very much alive and standing up as his murderer’s best man. No wonder this show has ben going for 55 years- it’s gold. Pure gold. Anyhoo…
While mental illness is the tried and true method soaps adopt to reconcile a character’s past, it’s not always necessary. Salemites seem to be a pretty forgiving bunch, I mean, Jack Devereaux (Matthew Ashford) sexually assaulting Kayla Brady (Mary Beth Evans), anyone?
But what of the Days audience? Will DOOL fans have it in their hearts to forgive Charlie, glasses or not, should the writers try to skew us that way?
Maybe not yet, we all need a villain to blame for Allie’s rape and Tripp’s framing, but if a priest can forgive—and marry—an attempted murdering, kidnapping, blackmailing, baby-stealing, lying schemer like the delightful Nicole Walker (Arianne Zucker) then surely we can all forgive Charlie his sins one day?
