Some people call it fiction, other people might go as far as calling it fact, but for Netflix, they are keeping things just the way things are. There is a new report that says the online streaming giant is rejecting a bid to add a disclaimer calling The Crown Season 4 a work of fiction.
As many fans know, the fourth season of the much-hyped about series depicts a controversial time in the 1980s for the royal family. Here’s what you need to know.
The drama series has faced some calls from key British figures to make it clear to viewers that the events that have been depicted on the show aren’t based on fact but are fiction and that they shouldn’t be considered actual historical events. Netflix doesn’t seem interested in the criticism.
Netflix Refuses To Label ‘The Crown’ Season 4 As ‘Fiction’
“We have always presented The Crown as a drama — and we have every confidence our members understand it’s a work of fiction that’s broadly based on historical events,” reads a statement released by Netflix Saturday.
“As a result we have no plans — and see no need — to add a disclaimer.”
Meanwhile, there’s a new poll that suggests about 35 percent of viewers think that the opinion of the British monarchy has improved a lot, thanks to the series.
According to the Sunday Times of London, while 35 percent have a more favorable opinion of the royal family after watching The Crown, about 42 percent say they didn’t feel any different from the family.
Some of the episodes detail Princess Diana’s loneliness before and after she married Prince Charles, along with Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. As many fans know, Princess Diana tragically died in 1997 and Charles and Camilla married in 2005.
What’s more, 23 percent said their impression of the family had worsened. Apparently, those viewers are the ones who fear the royals the most. As for as Prince Charles is concerned, 39 percent of viewers still have the same opinion while 34 percent think better of him.
