As a lot of Star Wars fans already know, one of their own has passed away, actor David Prowse, the original Darth Vader, he was age 85 and he had been a personal trainer and due to his large, 6’6 foot frame, had ended up playing monsters in a lot of movies.
His Agent, Thomas Bowington said of him, “May the force be with him, always.” indeed, may the man rest in peace. He gave an entire fandom many, many hours of entertainment and was, from what I always heard, very kind to fans at conventions. But apparently, to some people, that isn’t quite enough. One twitter user is quoted as saying this:
“It’s a pity that later in life he lost his way politically.”
I have a question for the twitter user, how does that even matter now that the man is dead? The man’s family and fans are grieving, and he may have had different political views than some of us, but the fact of the matter is, he, at least on the surface, seemed to be a pretty good guy.
There is a time and a place to bring up such matters, and right after someone dies is a really, really tacky way to criticize them, for one thing it adds insult to injury to the people who are grieving that person, for another, the person can’t actually defend themselves, also, it’s bad to speak ill of the dead, but I guess this particular twitter user’s Mom has never told them that old proverb.
While the twitter user didn’t specify how Mr. Prowse ‘lost his way’ politically, since the twittersphere has been a flurry of performative activism this year, I’m going to assume that they meant something about being conservative.
The last time I checked, David Prowse was a British citizen, which means, even if he was conservative (I’m not saying he was either way), British conservatism and American conservativism are two very different political animals. That being said, the point is rather moot now, because the man is not present on the earth anymore.
So, what was the twittersphere actually trying to accomplish by this tweet? We’re not sure, but we can only hope that they learn better manners in the future. RIP to David Prowse, and our deepest condolences to his family.
