During the 2016 Presidential election, Beyonce and her husband Jay-Z both supported Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. She also made headlines during the midterms when she made an eleventh hour endorsement for Democrat Beto O’Rourke’s Senate campaign in Texas. Unfortunately, it was a little bit too late as Republican incumbent Ted Cruz managed to hold on to his seat.
Beyonce’s Silence: Why Hasn’t She Publicly Endorsed Joe Biden?
Cooper Lawrence, journalist and author of Celebritocracy: the Misguided Agenda of Celebrity Politics in a Postmodern Democracy, recently told the BBC that the reason why so many people believe in celebrity endorsements is because fans feel as though the celeb is speaking to them directly.
“There’s something called the illusion of intimacy, and that’s really at play here,” she said. Celebrities, more than ever before, tell us about their kids or their lives or their break-ups, making us feel as though we know them, and can trust them.”
Lawrence also said that many people know more about their favorite celebrities than they do about some of the people who live in their neighborhood, and that’s why they have so much trust in their endorsements and political opinions.
“You know, I know Kim Kardashian more than I know about my next door neighbor” Lawrence said. So if Kim Kardashian says vote for Biden, a fan could be swayed, especially if they’re unfamiliar with politics.”
But when it comes to Beyonce, her silence with Biden might be sending a huge message and it’s one that has many fans concerned. Will she make another eleventh hour plea to help the Democratic candidate? With the race being as tight as it is, it might not have the kind of impact that the Biden team is hoping and crossing their fingers for. Watch this space.
