British Royal Family News says that Princess Diana not only had a very turbulent marriage to Prince Charles, but she also had a very turbulent childhood as well, according to her brother Charles Spencer. The nobleman recently recounted his shared childhood trauma with the late Princess of Wales. Here’s what he has to say.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, Charles Spencer opened up about how his parents’ divorce wasn’t easy on both him and Diana when they were children. In 1969, their father John Spencer, the 8th Earl Spencer, split from their mother, Frances Shand Kydd. Charles says that it was a traumatizing experience for both him and his sister Diana. Charles’ older sisters are Lady Sarah McCorquodale, 65, and Jane Fellowes, Baroness Fellowes, 63.

“Diana and I had two older sisters who were away at school, so she and I were very much in it together and I did talk to her about it,” Spencer said. “Our father was a quiet and constant source of love, but our mother wasn’t cut out for maternity. Not her fault, she couldn’t do it. While she was packing her stuff to leave, she promised Diana [then aged five] she’d come back to see her. Diana used to wait on the doorstep for her, but she never came.”

Charles also said that because of his childhood experiences, he’s been in and out of therapy for almost 20 years. And while the work he’s had to put in has been both “agonizing and horrible,” he admits that the result has been “cathartic.”

“Coming out the other side has been good,” said the nobleman. “The one thing I’ve learned through all the stuff I’ve tackled is that very few people set out to be destructive.”
