WWE has a lot of creative ways to build up rivalries, and one of the most common themes that we have seen is by having two unlikely rivals team together to take the tag team championships. It has been something that we have seen on countless occasions in the past, and even in this modern day it has been a common element.
The current Women’s Tag Team Champions are actually rivals, which means that there are no prizes for guessing what will be happening as soon as they lose the titles when they do. But, these are three other times two rivals have held the tag team championships.
WWE News: Sheamus And Cesaro
Looking back it’s almost surprising that nobody could have foreseen this becoming the success that it eventually became. Cesaro and Sheamus endured a brutal rivalry back in 2016, with the two superstars competing in an NBA-style best of seven series to see who the better wrestler really was.
However, after the seventh, and final match was a double countout, Mick Foley decided that they should work together as a tag team. The team eventually ended the record reign of the New Day to win the gold, and The Bar was born.
The team quickly became one of the best things on television, and there was disappointment when they eventually went their own ways to focus on singles action.
WWE News: John Cena And Shawn Michaels
Winning the tag team championships doesn’t always mean that the superstars will go onto become good friends, and that was certainly the case when Cena and Michaels captured the gold before WrestleMania 23.
Michaels won a triple threat match to become number one contender on Raw, before it was revealed that Michaels and Cena would team to take on Randy Orton and Edge for the tag team titles.
Cena and Michaels won the gold, but lost them soon after as Michaels superkicked Cena during a title defence. The two went on to have a good match for the WWE Championship at Mania, which was won by Cena.
WWE News: Steve Austin And The Undertaker
There aren’t many tag teams that could compete with the Undertaker and Steve Austin if they were actually on the same page. However, the two went on to win the tag titles during their lengthy rivalry in 1998 as they defeated Kane and Mankind.
Their reign didn’t last, as there was clear friction between the two superstars. They lost the gold just over two weeks later before the Undertaker took on Steve Austin at SummerSlam.
