King Harald of Norway recently went on the record to say that he thinks the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo will not proceed as scheduled. Here’s what he has to say.
According to Royal Center, King Harald made his comments during a conversation with Norwegian athlete Karsten Warholm and his coach Leif Olav Alnes. Warholm won gold in the 400 m hurdles at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships, and at the 2018 European Championships.
And while there are a lot of athletes just like Warholm who are still dreaming of Olympic gold next summer, King Harald doesn’t think it will happen, even though a Covid-19 vaccine is currently in the works.
King Harald Of Norway Thinks The 2021 Olympics In Tokyo Will Get Canceled
The King said, “Do we want to gather 70,000 people now? No, we cannot do that. Neither for the sake of the participants nor for the sake of the mood. It will be completely empty. The Olympics is the only place where all the sports are gathered.”
Karsten Warholm replied to the King’s comments: “It is better to compete than not to compete. At the same time, there are so many considerations that are more important now.” The Kings answer was: “It is interesting, but a little scary too”.”
As many royal fans know, this summer’s Olympics were postponed when the coronavirus pandemic began making headlines back in mid-March. The Tokyo Olympics are now rescheduled for July 23, 2021. While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, this might be the first Olympic event without any spectators.
Meanwhile, nine vaccine makers say they have signed a joint pledge to uphold “high ethical standards,” meaning they won’t week premature government approval for any Covid-19 vaccines to develop. The companies that signed the pledge include AstraZeneca, BioNTech, Moderna, Pfizer, Novavax, Sanofi, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson and Merck.
