There’s a good possibility that TikTok might be manned in the U.S. and according to some of the biggest stars on the app, they are terrified about what this means for their future. Here’s what you need to know. TikTok is a Chinese video-sharing social networking service owned by ByteDance, a Beijing-based internet technology company founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming. It is used to create short dance, lip-sync, comedy and talent videos. And yes, it is an app that is used by almost every pre-teen and teen on the planet. The company says that about 60 percent of TikTok’s users in the United States are between the ages of 16 and 24.
Just this week, government officials, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo suggested that the U.S. is looking at banning TikTok and some other Chinese social media apps after allegations made that the platform is data-farming users’ information. What’s more, the U.S. is also concerned about what the app is going with the millions of users’ personal information. President Donald Trump also confirmed that the government is indeed looking at a potential TikTok ban. If a decision is reached, this will be the first app to be banned in the U.S.
TikTok Ban Has Many Stars And TikTokers Terrified About Their Future
“As far as I know, the U.S. Government has never banned an app before,” Jennifer Golbeck, a professor who specializes in data privacy at University of Maryland’s College of Information Studies told CNBC in a new interview. “If they were to do this, I suspect it would be through new regulations that Apple and Google need to comply with in their app stores.”
For a lot of TikTok fans and popular celebrities, this is troubling news. Some TikTok stars like 16-year-old Charli D’Amelio roughly make anywhere from $24k to $40k with just one sponsored post. Another TikToker named Sean, who runs @seandoesmagic and has 13.5 million followers, told TMZ that the TikTok shut down would cost him between $15k to $20k per sponsored post. TikToker Drage Kamerman has 2.1 million followers and said he makes $7,000 to $10,000 every few weeks. The one TikToker who happens to be the most worried is Niko Valdes. He says that he earns anywhere from $7,000 to $10,000 and won’t be able to feed his family, should the government decide to ban the app.
