Okay 2020, I think you’ve made your point. It is with a heavy heart that we at DSD announce that famed morning talk show host, Regis Philbin, has passed from this world.
In an announcement that his family made to People Magazine earlier they said that he died just one month shy of his 89th birthday and that they would like the privacy to grieve their loved one in peace.
We can certainly understand and respect the family’s wishes but tonight the entertainment world has a definite hole in it, one that will not, if ever, easily be filled.
When I was very young and still in school I didn’t often get to see the Regis and Kathy Lee show because in my particular TV market it came on at a time in which I would have normally been in school.
However things change and as I got older I was homeschooled so we would tune in a lot more often to these morning segments, but what I remember most about Regis Philbin is his appearances on the Late Late show with David Letterman and what a good sport he was about the shenanigans that went on there.
If he wasn’t being mentioned in a top 10 list then he was being shot walking down the street or doing some other random action. He had a great sense of humor.
The Legendary Regis Philbin dies at 88
Same goes for when he appeared on How I Met Your Mother, I wasn’t actually too big of a fan of that show but I loved the episode he was in simply because him being in it so randomly offered that one kick of humor that it needed in order for me to be able to enjoy it.
In case you’re wondering, it’s the episode a out the world’s greatest hamburger and I think you can find it on hulu.
Philbin was a graduate of Notre Dame and whenever they had a game coming up you could count on him to be hyped for his team, or down in the dumps when they lost.
Even though its been awhile since I’ve heard one of these rants I will definitely say that without a doubt, it’s one of those things in the American vernacular that I will miss.
Remembering Regis takes me back to a carefree time in the mid-90’s, it was Halloween morning of 1994 and we had just tuned in, he and Kathy Lee had dressed as each other for Halloween and my family and I were getting the world’s biggest kick out of it.
I had just adopted my first poodle from the pound and those costumes gave me the idea to give her a decidedly NYC costume, so using a baby tank top I dressed her up as an NYC City Marathon runner and that night went to Taco Bell and amused the staff there with it.
That’s only tangently related to Mr. Philbin but it’s an example of the kind of good, carefree memories that his memory inspires. Rest in Peace, Reeg.
