The latest Beverly Hills, 90210 flashback reveal there was one story arc in particular that moved us back then. To this day, the final episode of the arc can move us. And if you’re a fan of this ‘90s classic, we’re sure you know what we’re talking about. Let’s go back in time and revisit a heartbreaker.
Beverly Hills, 90210 flashback: The setup
In some ways, this story started back when Jack McKay (Josh Taylor, Days of Our Lives) “died”. That tragic moment deeply affected Dylan McKay (Luke Perry) and led to a bit of a spiral that also affected other aspects of his life.
Obviously, this Beverly Hills, 90210 flashback was made worse by the fact he and Jack were just getting into a good place in their relationship. Plus, Dylan had to feel survivor’s guilt over Jack taking those keys instead of him. But later on, he’d learn the truth about his father’s death. Well, sort of. He found out who was responsible for the hit and this ended up facilitating his character’s departure a couple of years into their college run.
Beverly Hills, 90210 flashback: Love
The man in question was Tony Marchette (Stanley Kamel), a mobster. Dylan decided he was going to get close to Marchette’s kid to as part of a plot to get the full truth—and revenge. However, Dylan didn’t count on Toni Marchette (Rebecca Gayheart) being a woman. Or that he’d fall in love with her. Brandon Walsh (Jason Priestley) warned him about the potential trouble ahead, but Dylan wouldn’t listen. And so broke a lot of fans’ hearts.
Beverly Hills, 90210 flashback: Tragedy
It was obvious this was going to be a bad situation. Tony was obviously not okay with it when he learned his daughter was seeing some strange man, and even more unhappy to learn he was Jack’s son. This led to a whole drama where he did his best to get in between the couple. However, Toni was headstrong and refused to give Dylan up. And Dylan wasn’t willing to give her up, either. It led to a tragic Romeo and Juliet-type of ending.
As this Beverly Hills, 90210 flashback progressed, Tony got more and more determined. He couldn’t bear the sight of his daughter marrying Dylan, so he showed up at the beach house on Toni’s wedding day to beg her not to go through with it. When that failed, he decided to get rid of Dylan once and for all. Under the guise of a “peaceful” gathering now that they’re officially family, he tried to lure Dylan to his home, where an assassin would follow and kill him before Dylan could arrive at Tony’s home.
Sadly, karma took a really sick turn when circumstances forced Toni to get in that car instead. The shot of Dylan holding a lifeless Toni in the street is one we still remember vividly, even years after the original airing. We also remember the excellent job Perry and Kamel did during a graveyard scene where Dylan pointed out they’re even now before he packed up and left for Hawaii as planned, with their cat in tow. His pain radiated through the screen, and it’s easily the best moment in the show’s history for us.
